Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you open for in-person services?
Yes.  All of our services for Bible class & worship accommodate in-person attendance.  Click/tap here to see all of our times of services.

Where can I park?
You can park curbside along Isabella Street as well as in the grass along the sides & behind the building.

Do you have a dress code for your services?
No.  Some will be dressed in suits & dresses while others will be more casual.  Wear what you feel is appropriate & respectful to show reverence in worshipping God (Psalm 89:7; Hebrews 12:28).  The Bible offers no particular dress code other than modesty (1 Timothy 2:9).  Of course, the Bible standard of modest apparel would apply not only during times of worship but everyday living as well.  Therefore, we do politely request modest apparel be worn for all church functions - indoors or outdoors.

Do you have a nursery for my children?
Yes.  We love having children in our worship assemblies!  But if the need arises, we do have a separate room (unstaffed) for you to take care of your children during Bible class or worship.  It is equipped with audio & a window (with blinds) looking into the auditorium so that you can remain connected & continue to participate in the church services.

What denomination is the church of Christ?
The church of Christ does not belong to, and is not part of, any denomination.  We consider ourselves nondenominational or undenominational.  We are simply the church which belongs to Christ.  He built the church (Matthew 16:18), He purchased the church (Acts 20:28), and He is head of the church (Colossians 1:18).  Therefore, His church wears His name (Romans 16:16).  We seek religious unity based upon the Bible (Ephesians 4:3-6) while avoiding manmade religious division (1 Corinthians 1:10-13).  Click/tap here to read more about our history and plea for unity.

Does the church of Christ have a creed or manual?
No.  At least, there is no creed in the usual sense of the word.  The belief of the church is stated fully & completely in the Bible.  There is no other creed, manual, or discipline to which the members of the church of Christ give their allegiance.  The Bible is considered as the only infallible guide to heaven.

How does one become a member of the church of Christ?
On the first day of the church's existence, those who repented and were baptized were saved (Acts 2:38).  From that day forward, all those who were saved were added to the church by the Lord Himself (Acts 2:47).  Therefore, in seeking to follow this pattern, churches of Christ do not speak of membership in terms of some ritual after salvation which must be followed for joining the church.  The New Testament gives certain steps which were taken by people in that day to become Christians.  When a person became a Christian that person was automatically a member of the church.  The same is true of churches of Christ today.  There is no separate set of rules or ceremonies which one must follow to be inducted into the church.  There is no voting to determine the approval of the membership application.  When one becomes a Christian, one also becomes, at the same time, a member of the church.  No further steps are required to qualify for church membership.  As long as one remains faithful as a Christian, that individual remains a member of the church.  Click/tap here to read more about salvation & becoming a member of the Lord's church.

Does the church of Christ believe in the virgin birth & bodily resurrection of Jesus?
Yes & yes.  Click/tap here to read more about our beliefs.

Does the church of Christ believe in predestination?
Only in the sense that God predestines the righteous to be eternally saved and the unrighteous to be eternally lost.  The statement of the apostle Peter, “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him” (Acts 10:34-35) is taken as evidence that God did not predestine individuals to be eternally saved or lost, but that each individual determines his/her own destiny.  Click/tap here to read more about salvation.

Does the church of Christ believe in heaven & hell?
Yes.  The statement of Christ in Matthew 25:46 and His narrative of Lazarus & the rich man (Luke 16:19-31), as well as other passages of scripture, are taken at face value.  It is believed that after death each person must come before God in judgment and that he/she will be judged according to the deeds done while they lived (Hebrews 9:27).  After judgment is pronounced, that person will spend eternity either in heaven or hell.

Why does the church of Christ emphasize baptism?
Churches of Christ place much stress on the need for baptism because it is a command of Christ, it is essential for salvation, and it is mentioned within numerous examples of conversions in the New Testament.  According to the scriptures, baptism is done for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38), to wash away sins (Acts 22:16), to obey the Great Commission of Christ (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:16), to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5), to get into Christ (Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3-4), and because it saves us (1 Peter 3:21).

Why does the church of Christ baptize only by immersion?
The word "baptize" comes from the Greek word baptizo and literally means, “to dip, to immerse, to plunge.”  In addition to the literal meaning of the word, immersion is the method used because it was the practice of the church in apostolic times (Acts 8:38-39).  Still further, only immersion conforms to the description of baptism as given by the apostle Paul in Romans 6:3-5 where he speaks of it as a burial & resurrection.

Does the church of Christ baptize infants?
No.  Only those who have reached the “age of accountability” are accepted for baptism.  The examples given in the New Testament are always of those who have heard the gospel preached and have believed it.  Faith must always precede baptism, so only those old enough to understand & believe the gospel are considered fit subjects for baptism.  Also, baptism is for the purpose of removing sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16) which the infant is not old enough to have committed yet (since sins are a transgression of God's law - 1 John 3:4), therefore infant baptism is unnecessary & unwarranted.

Does the church of Christ offer prayers to saints?
No.  God the Father is considered the only one to whom the prayers may be addressed.  It is further understood that Christ stands as the mediator between God & man (1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25).  All prayers are therefore offered to God the Father through Christ, or in the name of Christ (John 16:23-26).

How often does the church of Christ observe communion (the Lord's supper)?
A central part of the worship on each Lord's day (Sunday) is the partaking of the Lord’s supper.  This memorial supper was inaugurated by Jesus on the night of His betrayal (Matthew 26:26-28).  It is observed by Christians in memory of the Lord's death (1 Corinthians 11:24-26).  The emblems - unleavened bread & fruit of the vine - symbolize the body & blood of Jesus (1 Corinthians 10:16).  Concerning the frequency of our observance, we note the example of the Christians in the New Testament (Acts 20:7).  Just as the Old Testament required the Israelites to "remember the Sabbath" (referring to every Sabbath/Saturday - Exodus 20:8), "the first day of the week" would also logically refer to every first day of the week (Sunday).  Click/tap here to read more about worship.

Does the church of Christ tithe?
Each first day of the week the members of the church “lay by in store as God hath prospered them” (1 Corinthians 16:2).  The amount of this free-will offering is determined privately by the one who is giving and is to be done voluntarily, cheerfully, and not by coercion or compulsion.  There is no required percentage or dollar amount since tithing (giving a required 10%) is not found in the New Testament.  The church of Christ does not engage in outside solicitations or fundraisers in order to financially support the work of the church.

Why does the church of Christ not use instrumental music, choirs, or theatrical drama routines in worship?
As a result of the distinctive plea of the church of Christ – a return to New Testament faith & practice – acappella congregational singing is the only music used in the worship.  This singing, unaccompanied by mechanical instruments of music, and participated in by the whole congregation, conforms to the music used in the first-century apostolic church and for several centuries thereafter (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).  It is understood that there is no authority for engaging in acts of worship not found in the New Testament.  This principle eliminates the use of instrumental music, along with the use of choirs, solos, performance skits, and other similar elements.  Click/tap here to read more about worship.
